FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

1What procedures do you perform?

We perform both open and less invasive surgeries like laparoscopy. In addition to these procedures, we perform endoscopy as well as breast biopsy to check for breast cancer.

Other surgeries include:

  • Surgery to repair hernias
  • Thyroidectomy
  • Surgery to treat gastric, rectal and colon cancer
  • Emergency procedures to resolve peptic ulcers, remove an obstruction in the bowel and appendicitis
  • Surgery to resolve other gastrointestinal diseases
2Why do I need surgery?
You may undergo surgery for several reasons- the first being to prevent your condition from escalating, management of a cancerous lesion and the other is to relieve pain and other symptoms. Some less invasive investigative procedures are done to diagnose your condition before any surgical procedure takes place.
3What types of anaesthesia are used?
Your surgeon will inform you about the type of anaesthesia used. Anaesthesia could be local, regional or general, but this depends on the surgery you choose to undergo. Local anaesthesia only numbs sensation in one part of your body. It doesn't last nearly as long as regional anaesthesia, which numbs a larger portion of your body over a few hours. You can discuss questions related to the type of anaesthesia used further with our anaesthesiologist, who specialises in pain management.
4What’s recovery like after a surgical procedure?
We will advise you on what to expect after any procedure. See post-op leaflet. Your general surgeon addresses any concerns that you may have and redirects your anxiety into more productive tasks like taking care of your wounds, getting enough bed rest and exercise while at the same time drinking enough fluids. Your doctor will discuss when it’s possible to return to work or resume exercise.
5What can I expect to happen at my first consultation?
We review all your previous medical records and any documentation from your family doctor before we perform a physical exam. If the results from a physical exam are inconclusive, we conduct diagnostic tests to determine the cause of your symptoms.
6How do I prepare for surgery?
Before surgery, you will be provided with specific instructions on when to stop eating and what type of anaesthesia will be used. It’s vital to adhere to these preoperative instructions to prevent complications or inaccuracies during procedures.
