Hernia Repair Surgery

A hernia is a break in the muscular wall, causing its contents to seep through this opening. A majority of hernias occur in the stomach region, near the hips.

Types of hernias are:

  • Inguinal hernia occurs when tissue or a portion of the intestine breaks through an opening in the groin at the upper inner thigh.
  • A femoral hernia mostly occurs in women, and like the inguinal hernia, some of the fatty tissue leaks out from the groin.
  • An umbilical hernia happens when some of the intestines break through a hole in the navel.
  • A hiatus hernia occurs when a piece of the stomach moves upward into the chest cavity through a hole in the diaphragm.
  • An incisional hernia is when some tissue breaks through a hole in the abdomen due to a previous abdominal or pelvic surgery.
Symptoms of a hernia
  • An apparent bulge near the abdomen or pelvis
  • Pain near the area
  • Pain when engaging in strenuous exercise
Causes of a hernia
A hernia is a result of a weakened muscular wall due to strain on the abdomen or groin. Hernias can happen due to persistent coughing, being overweight or after giving birth.
Hernia repair surgery

Surgery is the only method to fix a hernia. Depending on the type of hernia, the doctor will discuss open and laparoscopic surgical options with her patients. Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication (LNF) is surgery to repair a hiatal hernia. Nissen Fundoplication occurs under general anaesthesia on an outpatient basis. Surgeons make a tiny incision in the stomach's upper region and insert a trocar, a tube, through a bendable instrument known as a laparoscope. The surgeon carefully pushes back tissue through this device and seals the muscular wall with a surgical mesh.

With each hernia repair surgery, the technique differs slightly and depends on the type of hernia sustained.

The after-effects of hernia repair surgery
After hernia repair surgery, patients receive instructions on how to care for their incision sites, what diet to follow and physical activity they can perform. There is a chance that the hernia may return even after surgery due to weakened tissues and poor healing.

1. What is the severity of a hernia?

When a femoral or inguinal hernia is left untreated, the following complications may arise:

  • A blockage within the inguinal canal causing vomiting/nausea
  • Strangulation happens when the intestine gets stuck, and its blood supply is cut off
2. How do you know you have a hernia?

A noticeable bulge in the abdominal region or groin is one of the most apparent signs of a hernia.

Other signs are:

  • A lump that disappears or becomes small
  • Pain or discomfort when coughing, laughing or picking up an object
3. Does hernia repair surgery last long?
Hernia repair surgery takes forty-five minutes, and you can return home the same day, especially after undergoing laparoscopic surgery. The time it takes to recover from open hernia repair surgery may differ.
