In-Room Procedures

Over the years, several care interventions outside the hospital have developed, which have helped cut hospital costs significantly. The recent innovations in surgical technology, less invasive surgical techniques, conscious sedation, expertise in private medical care, and the latest COVID-19 developments have led to a rise in in-office procedures carried out under stringent safety protocols.

Modern medicine has advanced rapidly with in-room procedures initiated since the 1970s, with rapid and consistent growth from the 1980s. Millions of surgical procedures are carried out safely in doctors' offices under the supervision of trained medical staff.

Dr Bronwyn Boesack is a highly qualified female general surgeon adept at performing in-room procedures in complete privacy, surrounded by an all-female staff.

What in-room procedures does Dr Boesack perform?

  • Colonoscopy is a thirty to forty-minute in-room procedure which involves the insertion of a bendable scope (colonoscope) through the natural orifice (the anal region). The insertion of the scope can take fifteen to twenty minutes, but the duration can last longer, depending on what needs to be done.
  • Gastroscopy entails the placement of the probe (endoscope) through the mouth and into the stomach and duodenum to check for abnormalities. At the same time, Dr Boesack may retrieve tissue samples for a biopsy to confirm the presence of H. pylori bacteria, a common reason for peptic ulcers.
  • Proctoscopy (surgical removal of polyps) involves the resection of abnormal growths for biopsy, which entails further analysis of the tissue. The tissue is transferred to the laboratory, where the medical team views the sample underneath a microscope to check for abnormal/cancerous cells.
How safe are these in-room procedures?
All endoscopic procedures, including a colonoscopy and gastroscopy, are performed under conscious sedation, meaning you will remain awake throughout the process. A qualified nurse and anaesthesiologist remain on standby, ensuring you are safe and comfortable throughout the procedure.

1. How much can I expect to pay for these in-room procedures?
The pay expectancy is between R500 and R5000, based on medical aid rates.
2. What happens before the procedure?
Dr Boesack offers an initial consultation before scheduling the procedure in order to assess the patient's condition thoroughly.
3. How do I prepare for the scheduled procedure?
Dr Boesack will adequately prepare you for the procedure, and the medical team will provide a list of preoperative instructions ahead of time.
